The Science of Neurofeedback Technology

Find out how it works!

The therapist places a cap with electrodes, conductors of electrical information, on the patient's scalp, in order to record brain wave activity. The signal is processed by the Neurofeedback system and, this way, information is extracted about the level of functionality of each of the brain's Brodmann areas. This investigation represents the map of the brain, that is, the BrainMap.

How Neurofeedback therapy trains the brain

Disorders represent imbalances in brain activity. Thus, an overly strong discharge of nerve impulses, or a lack of intensity in them, represents, for Neurofeedback specialists, indicators of neurological conditions and disorders.

By interpreting the data provided by the BrainMap, the specialist knows both the brain areas that are not functioning within normal parameters and the centers associated with the patient's abilities and talents. Depending on the patient's goals, the Neurofeedback therapist will establish the therapeutic intervention protocol of the Neurofeedback training sessions.

Brain training involves modifying the brain's wave frequencies with the help of visual and auditory stimuli, so that brain activity returns to optimal parameters. These stimuli are the applications of the Neurofeedback software, which can take the form of: therapeutic games, musical passages, video or audio fragments, and so on. In the case of therapeutic games, the patient produces changes within the game using nothing but changes in their own brain activity. Your brain literally trains itself while you play video games with your mind!

The therapist simultaneously monitors the selected frequencies and chooses the electrodes to work on, in line with the patient's goals. Exposed to such stimuli, the brain trains itself and becomes stronger, thanks to its capacity for neuroplasticity. Through these interventions, the brain learns how to manage conditions, how to adapt to stress and pathogenic factors and how to overcome them. Beyond the patient's conscious effort, the underlying echoes of this therapeutic intervention technique produce beneficial changes in the areas where interventions were requested.
