What cognitive function is

Extraverted thinking, by contrast, is oriented outwards and focuses on the external world, on social interaction and on direct experience. People with extraverted thinking are often energised by contact with others and prefer to express their thoughts and ideas spontaneously, usually in group settings. They are frequently seen as open, sociable and communicative, and they adapt easily to new situations and to teamwork.

Even so, extraverted thinking also has its drawbacks, such as a tendency to make impulsive decisions or to pay less attention to inner reflection and detailed planning. Despite this, extraverts can be extremely effective in environments that call for quick reactions and dynamic decisions, bringing energy and enthusiasm to what they do. They often manage to inspire and motivate others through their optimistic and practical approach.

  • Decision making: Decision making is the cognitive process through which we weigh up different options and choose the most appropriate course of action on the basis of the information available. This function involves rational thinking as well as emotional and social influences. In Jungian terms, decision making can be seen as an expression of the judging function, in which perceived information is processed and analysed in order to arrive at an optimal choice.
  • Problem solving: Problem solving is the ability to identify solutions to challenges or obstacles. This function involves recognising a problem, generating possible solutions, evaluating the options and implementing the most effective strategy. Problem solving often requires the use of several cognitive functions at once, including critical thinking, memory and decision making. It is essential for adapting to new situations and for overcoming everyday difficulties.
  • Cognitive control and self-regulation: Cognitive control, also known as executive function, involves managing and coordinating the other cognitive functions in order to reach complex goals. Extraverted sensing (Se) is an outward-oriented cognitive function that focuses on the direct, immediate perception of the surrounding environment. People for whom this function is dominant or auxiliary are highly attentive to details in their surroundings and are often energised by new sensory experiences. They prefer to live in the present moment, responding quickly to stimuli and adapting easily to change. Extraverted sensing is tied to a need for action and for intense physical experience, and it is associated with a preference for concrete activities, for exploring the world and for interacting directly with the environment. These individuals are usually highly observant and able to react effectively to what is happening around them.

The impact of cognitive functions in everyday life

Cognitive disorders are conditions that affect the mental functions essential to processing information, such as attention, memory, thinking and decision making. These disorders vary in severity and impact, from mild problems that temporarily disrupt daily functioning to serious conditions that significantly affect a person's quality of life and independence. Cognitive disorders can be caused by genetic factors, brain injury, neurodegenerative disease or psychiatric conditions, and they can affect both cognitive and behavioural functioning.
