What is ADHD?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder with biological foundations, which affects the executive functions of the brain - in particular the capacity to sustain attention, to control impulses and to regulate behaviour according to context. In children, ADHD often manifests itself through constant restlessness, difficulty in following instructions and marked impulsivity. In adults, the same mechanisms can lead to mental chaos, chronic procrastination, disorganisation or difficulties in managing emotions.

Although it is expressed differently depending on age, ADHD is not a problem of willpower or of upbringing, but a particularity of the way in which the brain processes information and responds to stimuli.

How we treat ADHD in 3 steps

01

You do a BrainMap analysis

We analyse the brain's electrical activity through a state-of-the-art neurocognitive assessment (qEEG), to identify the areas of abnormal activity associated with the onset of ADHD.

02

You receive a personalised Neurofeedback plan

Based on your brain map, you receive the interpretation of the results and a treatment plan adapted 100% to your brain pattern, prepared by Dr. Alina Diana Nemeș and Clin. Psych. Alina Robu.

03

You start the brain training

Your brain learns to self-regulate, responding differently to stress, fear and triggers. The training sessions are relaxing, non-invasive and help you reduce the intensity and frequency of panic attacks without medication.

What does brain training do in ADHD?

Brain training acts directly on the imbalanced brain activity that generates ADHD symptoms. With the help of visual and auditory feedback, the brain learns to self-regulate and generate healthy activity patterns.

  • Regulates brain activity in the areas responsible for attention and self-control
  • Reduces restlessness, impulsivity and disorganized behaviour
  • Improves the ability to learn and stay organized
  • Supports adaptation in social and school environments
  • A completely non-invasive method, adapted to the age and cognitive profile of the child or adult

The results have been documented in hundreds of clinical studies, demonstrating this method's effectiveness in regulating brain activity and improving overall health.

Neurofeedback research

What do the studies say?

Arns et al. (2009)

Arns et al. (2009) - Meta-analysis of 15 studies, over 700 patients:

  • Neurofeedback has effects comparable to stimulant medication in reducing inattention and impulsivity.
  • The effectiveness is maintained or even grows over time, unlike the fading effects of medication.
  • The standard protocols (TBR, SMR, SCP) have been classified as “efficacious and specific” in ADHD treatment.
Arns et al. (2009)

Meisel et al. (2013)

Meisel et al. (2013) - Randomised study with 23 children:

  • Both groups (neurofeedback vs. methylphenidate) showed significant symptom reductions.
  • Only the children who did neurofeedback showed visible academic improvements.
  • It suggests that neurofeedback supports not just symptom reduction, but overall performance.
Meisel et al. (2013)

Gevensleben et al. (2009)

Gevensleben et al. (2009) - Multicentre, randomised study with follow-up at 6 months:

  • 102 unmedicated children underwent either neurofeedback or cognitive training.
  • 52% of the children in the neurofeedback group recorded significant improvements, compared with 29% in the control group.
  • The effects were maintained or even increased after 6 months.

Frequently asked questions

Does neurofeedback also work for adults with ADHD, or only for children?

Yes, it works for adults too. Studies show that adults with ADHD can achieve clear improvements in concentration, organization, impulse management and professional performance. Neurofeedback helps them regain control over their brain activity, better regulate their attention and reduce the feeling of mental restlessness.

Is it safe and effective for young children?

Neurofeedback is completely safe and well tolerated even by young children. The protocol is personalised according to the child's age, level of development and symptoms. Clinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of the method in regulating attention, reducing hyperactivity and improving sleep, with no side effects. Most children experience the sessions as a pleasant, interactive activity, especially when video-game elements or attractive visual feedback are used.

How long does the treatment last and how many sessions are needed?

In general, a complete neurofeedback programme involves between 20 and 40 sessions, usually carried out 2–3 times a week. The duration can vary depending on the severity of the symptoms, the individual response and the objectives set at the beginning of the therapy. Some children or adults may notice the first improvements even after 10–15 sessions, but for stable, long-term results a complete programme is recommended. Every case is assessed individually, and the intervention plan is adapted along the way.

Is the procedure painful or tiring for the child?

It is a non-invasive, painless method. It involves no shocks, electrical impulses or medication. The electrodes placed on the scalp only read brain activity - they transmit nothing into the body. Most children feel comfortable during the sessions, and many enjoy the interactive format, which often includes games or videos controlled by their own brain activity. The therapy is designed not to tire the child but, on the contrary, to help them become more relaxed, focused and balanced.

What sets neurofeedback apart from other treatments for ADHD?

Unlike medication, which works only for as long as it is taken, neurofeedback trains the brain to regulate its own activity naturally. Studies show that the effects are maintained even after the therapy has ended, with no relapse. It is a long-term solution, with no side effects and no dependence. Neurofeedback targets the neurophysiological causes of ADHD, not only the symptoms, and the results can also include additional benefits such as better sleep, reduced anxiety and increased self-confidence.

As the parent of a child with ADHD, I am extremely grateful to the BrainMap team for their patience and dedication. I have seen remarkable improvements in my child's behaviour and ability to concentrate. At school he is more attentive, he can stay at his desk without disrupting the lesson, we have managed to build a homework routine for him, we now also manage to take him to basketball and he still has time to play.

For many years I felt a constant mental tension that caused me discomfort, agitation and irritability. I had the inspiration to go to the institute and, after the assessment, I found out that I had overactivation in certain areas of the brain. I completed 88 training sessions and now I am a different person: calm, peaceful, optimistic, and sometimes I wonder whether this state of mine is not happiness itself. Thank you to Mrs Alina Robu for her patience and for the attention she gave me, hello to Mia, hello to all the highly qualified staff I worked with!

Noticeable effects appeared already after the first two sessions, and then came many pleasant surprises linked to a greater ability to manage stress, to stimulate empathy, to improve communication, memory and the capacity for concentration... All of this, projected towards the people around me as well... created a circle of good consequences, improving other people's attitude towards me too. In other words... a total success!

When I started the therapies, I had given birth 3 months earlier, and the depression and the states of anxiety were a heavy burden for me. I am deeply grateful to the BrainMap team for their involvement and their warmth. It took a while before I began to be functional again, and to be able to be a mother who is present in her child's life. That is because I understood and accepted this responsibility, which used to frighten me terribly.
